About 350 health care workers will be off until Monday as crews flush out the water system at a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan building downtown after an employee was diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
"We're taking a very proactive stance with this," spokeswoman Helen Stojic said. "Our first priority is the health and well-being of our employees."
Stojic said one worker is being treated for the disease, which was diagnosed a week ago. She would not identify the worker or release details about his condition, but she said he is recovering. No other cases have been diagnosed, Stojic said.
"As soon as we became aware of the employee's health status, we initiated some testing of that building for the bacteria," Stojic said. "The air-conditioning results were negative, but we did have some positive results on some drinking fountains and toilets."
